This paper explains the rationale and steps currently being taken as part of a new initiative toestablish a national survey training school in Indonesia. Both basic training skills for field staffand continuous professional development courses for survey professionals are needed. Initial consensusbuilding, to agree and determine how these needs might be met, has involved various government departments,naval establishments and universities; all with a vested interest in hydrographic activities. However,the project is intended as a public/private partnership and momentum is being generated from the privatesector. Furthermore, survey training for construction and mining will complement hydrographic surveying.External accreditation of any training is also considered to be essential.
